Alternatives to 1080

PRESSURES ON 1080
As pressure builds on 1080, community groups, pest control professionals and conservators are seeking safer, more humane tools for pest control.

Connovation has the alternatives for ground control of pests and research is extending the range of these tools.

CURRENT ALTERNATIVES
Connovations’ strategy from inception has been consistently to develop tools that meet these criteria. Its flagship product, Feratox registered in1996, exemplifies this.  It is very effective at killing possums and wallabies, is humane, lacks secondary poisoning which is associated with 1080, has minimal environmental persistence and can be delivered in a range of baits and bait station to improve targeting of pests.

Feratox is complemented by RatAbate for rat control, and Feracol for the control of possums and rats.

The Warrior Trap for possums is ideal for those users who do not wish to use 1080 but prefer trapping alone or a combination of trapping and low residue poisons. A full range of rodent bait stations and traps are also available. Our products such as Erayz, a long life stoat & ferret lure, enable more efficient and cost effective trapping.

FUTURE TOOLS
Registration documents are currently being assessed by the Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) for zinc phosphide as another alternative to1080 for the control of possums.

Registration documents are also being prepared for a combination of cholecalciferol and coumatetralyl to provide an anticoagulant alternative for effective possum control.

Field trials are in progress for a low dose cholecalciferol bait which should be safer and less expensive whilst retaining effectiveness.

Anticipated timelines for product availability are 2010 (zinc phosphide) and 2011-13 (cholecalciferol andcoumatetralyl) subject to ERMA and NZFSA approvals and continued focused research and development effort.

In parallel we are pursuing the registration of para-aminopropiophenone(PAPP), a red blood cell toxicant, for 2010 – a novel poison for humane control of stoats and cats.

On the platform of PAPP, alternative red bloodcell (RBC) toxicants are being advanced for larger pests, possums and rodents. These “RBC” toxins are safer toxins, designed to minimise the impact of invasive animals, exhibiting humane performance and having a simple antidote.
