NestGard150 – lightweight enclosure for the 150 trap

Carrying traps and enclosures into the backcountry? Every kilogram matters.

The NestGard150 is a lightweight, stackable and robust enclosure designed specifically for the 150 kill trap series. The enclosure weighs just 1.2kg, or approximately 2.1kg with a 150 trap installed, making it easier to transport when establishing or extending remote trap lines.

Designed by trappers and manufactured in Christchurch, NestGard is made from durable, UV-resistant recyclable plastic. It is built to handle New Zealand field conditions, including snow loading and falling branches.

The enclosure also includes practical features that make installing and servicing your trap easier. Its lid detaches completely for straightforward cleaning, rebaiting and resetting. The internal ramp provides a small step down onto the 150 treadle. The reason why this is an advantage is that the animals weight is concentrated downwards so it is much harder for the animal to step backward when it has stepped onto the treadle.

Entry options

NestGard is available with a

  • Front entry – a conventional entrance positioned at the front of the enclosure
  • Side entry – a run-through configuration that allows predators to see a route through the enclosure – contact us to order this variation

The side-entry option was developed following trail-camera observations that showed rats were more willing to investigate tunnels they could move through instead of entering an enclosed dead end.

Native species considerations

The NestGard150 has been assessed by DOC’s Trap Technology Advisory Group as equivalent to trap tunnels that conform to relevant animal-welfare standards. It has also been added to DOC’s Trap Systems Performance Standards information.

Its dimensions are designed to meet requirements for use in areas where kiwi and weka are present.

Where kea are present, the relevant design standard requires a stamped metal grille. A metal grille option is available for these locations. Please contact us to order these.
